Sharing form the heart

Years later ... Silence

September 1, 2007

In May I had to go to Poland. I visited my mother’s apartment in the city of Poznan, and had to do some arrangements about it. This was quite difficult time… My friend Jan was very helpful driving me to several institutions and hosting me.

I was told that Andrzej, an artist and the man who created our first zendo in Poland was ill for quite a while. It might have been twenty five years ago since I met Andrzej last time. We decided to visit him, stopping in Katowice on my way South.

It was a gift to travel with Jan. We had six hours to chat and try to remember all the people who did zazen at the very beginning of our Polish Sangha. Finally, while I was climbing the stairs to the seventh floor of the building where the old zendo was and being excited to see Andrzej, my heart pounded…

“Hello Urszula!” his words and hugs were as warm as years ago…

Andrzej did not changed at all, apart from looking a little older, but still the same spirit and incredible energy. I truly felt as we met just yesterday…

The attic studio where the zendo was is now transformed again into living space and painting workshop. In the end of large room we sat drinking tea, right where the altar was. The green tea was incredibly tasty… We talked about this and that, in a very relaxed and quiet way. At one moment three of as stopped, and there was this long silence, very powerful pregnant silence. No words were needed, and we were like this for a while…

For me this moment in old zendo space, with Andrzej and Jan, and this silence was the highlight of my entire trip to Poland. I was so grateful and so happy…

As we were about to leave Andrzej wrote a dedication in his book: “For Urszula, Years later in the same place….”

Years later, in the same place… Indeed!

My hands palm to palm.
