Rat, snow and Mario...

February 7, 2008

The end of last year was very busy for me so New Year day went by without notice…

As things slow down a bit I decided to take time to reflect on Chinese New Year today February 7. Last night I was looking for the image of Rat and found this one. The piercing eyes of this creature are very penetrating, and I wonder what this rat does see?

The rat’s universe must be different that mine…

Henry David Thoreau said: It’s not what you look at matters, it’s what you see. So when you look at something what do you see?

Last night I did spend some time reading Scientific American magazine.

A friend recently gave me a subscription. In mid seventies I did abandon the field of physics for Zen practice and rarely update my knowledge with new developments. And so much happened since that time…

Physicists are very excited these days. New Large Hadron Collider is almost completed at CERN institute in Geneva, Switzerland. It took ten years to build it with international cooperation. If it will work as planned the machine would create environment of very high energy where beams of elementary particles will be colliding hopefully producing the most fundamental one called Higgs. This particle was predicted theoretically, but not found yet experimentally. The Collider could help to solve the problem of dark matter, which fills bigger part of universe and is the greatest puzzle of astronomy. It could also help to produce evidence of hidden space-time dimensions.

It looks that in a few years we may have a completely new understanding of universe and how it works. But will this help humanity and resolve all what is going on in contemporary world?

Today all is white. During night the snow covered treacherous water-ice layer, and it is easier to walk. And again as I went to do some work in the basement, struggling trough snow I recall the question: “Entire Arnold Park Street is covered with snow, why Zen Center building is not white?”

Realizing this may help one’s life more that understanding dark matter…

Each day brings us a numerous gifts. Do we notice them?

Young man Mario was among my gifts today. I had to measure him to make his robe. He came for training program from Germany w here he does zazen in friend’s small zendo in Köln. His mother is practicing zazen too. They both came to Germany from Croatia. The excitement, warmth and good spirit of this man reminds me of beginner’s mind.

I am very honored that I can make robes for both of them.

HA!
