Kannon with thousand hands

January 8, 2008

In Japan New Year celebrations are very important and last three days. I received this beautiful card from Nyogen and Ewa, Polish friends. They have been living and practicing Zen in Japan for long time. They are also artists painting zenga and mikkyoga.

Traditionally they make new cards each year. The card has certain required elements. Two big characters, called shoshun are related to the beginning of spring and are a kind of blessing and wishes of all the best.

The greetings are always finished with words “nine bows”. This is a very traditional - in Buddhism -  way to finish letter and one supposed to make nine bows…

New Year in lunar calendar will start On February 7, which is also the beginning of spring. This is a year of Rat /or mice, as some say/.

The year of Rat is connected with Senju-Kannon, Kannon with thousands hands. Being in thousand hands of Bodhisattva of Compassion make us feeling protected and full of hope for the positive change in the world this year…

Card created by Nyogen Nowak.

Nyogen, Thank you! for this beautiful card and explaining what the elements of it mean.

Kanzeon Namu Butsu…
