Sharing form the heart

It left me

October 30, 2008

Today is one of these gorgeous fall days. I feel relaxed after completing endless project of repairing Roshi’s ancient kesa and during lunch break took a walk on my magic street. Golden wind is manifesting itself. I run back up home to get my camera to take some pictures.

The scenery outside reminded me of Golden Wind Sesshin. This year Dai Bosatsu Mountain was purified by cold rain during sesshin and only last day golden wind appeared.

Sesshin finished only four weeks ago but it seems like ages since I came back. For some reasons I had no words to write about it. Maybe one day I will. It was very special.

And today I am packing for yet another one.

A year ago I wrote a page about Golden Wind and the meaning of this Zen expression. As we practice diligently one thinks that due to one’s effort we drop the poisons of our mind, greed anger and endless delusions…

But can one really drop anything off?

Recently someone was confronted and accused of leaving particular group and not being loyal. In this case this was a political organization. He said: I did not leave, it left me…

As I did hear his statement: It left me, I was struck.

Of course the man was talking about himself and that he has outgrown this particular stagnated and outdated social structure.

Similarly in our life as we grow and mature kindergarten and schools leaves us, groups leave us, even Zen teachers leave us… same as leaves are falling from the tree, naturally and by itself.

On my street today many trees still have golden leaves and with the wind they move due to the resistance of branches. Few trees have dry leaves hanging down from brunches but some are already completely bare, standing still.

In fall time bare trees, serene and unmovable have no need for a pile of dry leaves.
