Impossible Dream |

December 11, 2007 The Impossible Dream To dream the impossible dream To fight the unbeatable foe To bear with unbearable sorrow To run where the brave dare not to go To right the unrightable wrong To love pure and chaste from afar To try when your arms are too weary To reach the unreachable star This is my quest To follow that star No matter how hopeless No matter how far To fight for the right Without question or pause To be willing to march into Hell For a heavenly cause And I know if I’ll only be true To this glorious quest That my heart will lie peaceful and calm When I’m laid to rest And the world will be better for this That one man, scorned and covered with scars Still strove with last ounce of courage To reach the unreachable star. from MAN OF LA MANCHA (1972) Lyrics by Joe Darion
Rohatsu sesshin is a commemoration of Buddha’s Enlightenment. One of the koans I had to work on during this sesshin were Buddha’s words exclaimed at this particular moment, and I wonder if this was another mysterious Dharma arrangement… “Shakyamuni Buddha says: “As I now see all sentient beings everywhere, they’re endowed with the Tathagata’s wisdom and virtue. But because of deluded thoughts and attachments, they do not realize it.” While my Polish friends were driving me to bus station after sesshin, we were sharing some impressions from sesshin. One of them discovered clearly how difficult it is to drop all attachment, and how so called “ego” plays games to protect itself from dying… While home, I opened TV to see in what condition the world is… Another attack in Baghdad… Someone guns people in the church here… Small children dying in thousands from malaria in Africa… Human aggression is manifesting itself in all gross and subtle forms… One does wonder weather it is really true that ALL beings, as they are, do posses Buddha’s wisdom and virtue. And yet, this is true… Entire Universe IS a shining light… WAKE UP!
