Clear seeing, effective doing

June 9, 2008

Today I did receive a package with new glasses. This event is an inspiration for the title of this essay.

My eyesight was obviously going bad, which was clearly apparent when I had to sew project from black fabric. Seeing the stitches was almost impossible. I am making zafu shells and have done this project many times before but still the fingers were resisting familiar movements.

Getting the right glasses I could see perfectly and suddenly my fingers were moving almost unconsciously. Today I was able to produce three times faster than before…

Due to the dual nature of light itself as a wave and photons dark color fabric does absorb more photons, so not only one needs stronger lamp but also it is harder to see clearly.

This is a fact of physics in material world, but perhaps not only…

As we struggle in our practice to realize and actualize our True Nature, in dokusan room Roshi often asks: “How do you see this?” And when finally after much struggle the koan is digested, he would ask: “Is this clear? “

Seeing clearly ones own nature is the paramount importance not only for oneself but also for the sake of true Dharma Transmission. We do see the same moon but the difference of clear seeing is as between these two images.

Unfortunately there are very few people who would devote many years of practice and struggle to see the moon with all its details. And these days most Dharma Transmission do happen for political reasons.

If one wants to help others one needs not only to see but also apply effective action or remedy. It seems that the appropriate action comes naturally out of itself when one sees clearly. One immediately discerns the situation…

It was almost as fingers have done the job of pinning cushions shells effortlessly and very effectively once I was able to see the fabric and marks on it more clearly…
